MELBOURNE (AFP) – Australian spinner Nathan Hauritz is to undergo keyhole surgery to his injured right shoulder, officials said, leaving his World Cup hopes hanging in the balance.

Team physio Alex Kountouris said Hauritz, who was left in agony when he dislocated the shoulder during Friday’s one-day international against England, will face a fitness race for the World Cup starting next month in South Asia.

“Nathan Hauritz will have arthroscopic surgery of his shoulder joint in Melbourne,” Kountouris said on Sunday.

“This is a small procedure that we hope will give him the best opportunity to be available for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

“He will then have a period of intense rehabilitation and attempt to return to training in the coming weeks if we feel this is appropriate.

“His availability for the World Cup will depend on his progress through this rehabilitation.”

The injury comes at a shattering time for Hauritz, who was recalled to the one-day side after being overlooked for the Ashes Tests. Xavier Doherty has been called up for the remaining matches against England, which resume Sunday.

Injury-plagued paceman Shaun Tait is also under a fitness cloud after suffering a thigh strain on Friday, while batsman Mike Hussey is a World Cup doubt after surgery to reattach a hamstring tendon to his left knee.

Australia, who begin their World Cup defence against Zimbabwe on February 21, will play the third one-day match against England in Sydney on Sunday.
